24 Jan Brain Boosting Blueberry Smoothie
Blueberries contain a myriad of brain-boosting health benefits. The deep blue color comes from phytochemical, anthocyanin, whose abilities help to protect the body from heart disease, cancer, Type 2 diabetes, and inflammation. A one-cup serving contains 25% of our daily vitamin C and 4 grams of gut healthy fiber.
Spinach packs a punch of vitamin K, fiber, phosphorus, and thiamine. Spinach is also a plant-based source of iron. When combined with the vitamin C in blueberries in this smoothie, the iron is more readily absorbed in the body.
This smoothie is also a good source of magnesium, which is important for brain and nerve health. Magnesium plays an essential role in nerve transmission and neuromuscular conduction. It can serve as a protective factor against a number of neurological disorders. Additionally, spinach contains betaine, a compound involved in neurotransmitter synthesis and supports the brain’s antioxidant defenses. Without betaine, our body can’t produce dopamine and serotonin, which help to prevent depression and neurodegenerative disorders. There is also evidence that betaine helps decrease levels of homocysteine in the brain, which contributes to inflammation.
